Process & Beyond

I trust that my short monograph “About Aldo & His Art" will serve as an introduction to what is germane to the start and completion of various Series' of compositions that will follow. With each, the process begins with a small sketch (4"x4") that will evolve onto a larger canvas, a composition, interesting enough to entrance the occasional observer. The original portfolio of fifty-two pieces became intrinsically rewarding and pictorially challenging. Crossing over from musical invention to forms of the visual arts & new mediums of individual expression, is not rare. I do believe that in each case of artistic 'crossover' the processes are stylistically unique to the artist.   My processes, the step-by-step phases of my work, will be easily enumerated and understood. The first small drawing, with a black ballpoint pen, forms a thematic template of how I want the visual movement to flow and where the focal points will be elaborated. They are innovatively complex and surprisingly imbued with a modal quality; or mood!  Next, the sketch will be enlarged to a 7.5”x7.5”copy. During this second improvisational phase, white & black inks are employed to further emphasize the overall movement of the piece and to judiciously eliminate or enhance those areas that need to be balanced; namely the black/white counterpoint and asymmetrical black to white values and complementary additional shadings in pencil. An extremely important component of every composition is the integration of abstract images and the embodiment of ideas into a unified whole; A lyricism of abstract elements …. An aesthetic of integrated complexity.  The final improvisational step is to enlarge each composition onto premium canvas, via the exacting Giclée process of sprayed indelible inks. Affordable, impeccable reproduction is the future of compositions that will bear repeated viewings, over time.

.I use the word ‘beyond’ as an overarching concept, i.e., the ‘moreness’ that may be experienced by the beholder at present and future viewings. In striving to be expressed to the fullest, these compositions need to be re-experienced, re-interpreted. In fact, they can be framed and fitted with hardware that permits hanging in eight (8) different viewable positions; thereby changing their entire perspective with each newly-chosen position. Also, due to their stylistic continuity, they can be displayed in multiple combinations. Any given sketch has its own rhythmic, harmonic and interchangeable possibilities. Over time, by simply noticing or with concentrated examination, the value of being ‘Untitled’ will lend itself to personalizing, appreciating and actually re-completing/composing every piece! In a word: Improvising!                                                                     Further elaboration (improvising) of this first Series, which I named 'Black & White Counterpoint', led to multiple Series' that comprise my entire and on-going collection.                                   The notion that an experience is simultaneously an expression, and vice versa, is my motivating creative force.
